Project Main Details

At Risk Youth
We are looking for an empathetic, yet "real" (no radio VJ's here please!) sounding narrator to voice a corporate/persuasive documentary for a non-profit group of schools that help at-risk high school students get back on track to graduate. The program can be life-changing for these kids, helping to steer them off of the streets, away from gangs and in the direction of a productive, healthy life with a career.

The purpose of this video is to speak to legislators and local schools to inform them of the non-profit's mission, and ask for their support in passing legislation and referring students to the program.

We need a narrator who can convey the weight of this message in a caring, empathetic way without sounding too "Sarah McLaughlin late-night abused animal video." We want to move people to tears, but without hitting the drama so hard that they want to look away. This video will be used online and in personal meetings with legislators and school boards.

The term is in perpetuity for web, tradeshow and internal use. The video is 9 minutes long, and there is a shorter cut-down version of that as well, but we'll only need you to record ABOUT 2 MINUTES OF ACTUAL VOICE OVER (it is sparse throughout the video). If cast, we'll dial in and direct you via phone while you record the VO (you don't have to have a phone patch, we're okay with listening in on speaker phone, so long as we can hear you and give direction). The VO session should last about 1 hour.

Please read the script excerpt for your audition (this represents about 1/2 of the total length of the script). Please take your time with the read and leave BIG pauses between the sentences whenever you see this symbol: [X].

Again, we're looking for a caring, warm, more journalistic voice (think more "critically acclaimed documentary" vs. TV journalism) that can convey the situation in a way that elicits empathy, but doesn't sound too whiny or dramatic. If you've seen the documentary Waiting for Superman, you'll be familiar with the tone of this video. On a personal note, if you haven't seen that movie, you should watch it. It will change the way you look at education.

Script Details

There are over one million at-risk students in the United States. [X] Once a student drops out, their chances for a bright future grow dim. [X] They’ll be ineligible for NINETY percent of jobs, TWICE as likely to live in poverty, and a staggering EIGHT TIMES more likely to go to jail or prison.

What began as an education problem… quickly becomes an UNEMPLOYMENT problem… an ECONOMIC problem… a PUBLIC SAFETY problem. Communities pay the price… often, for generations.

If we want to have safer, more prosperous communities, it is absolutely critical that we interrupt the dropout cycle.

Please note that you should only use the script or your recording of it for auditioning purposes. The script is property, unless otherwise specified, of the voice seeker and it is protected by international copyright laws.
