Script Details

My country… India… It is a wonderful country. It is a beautiful country. It is a populous country. It is a diverse country… ancient and modern… traditional and cultural… India is a spiritual country, but it is also a lost country.

We have many religions. Hindu is the largest. But we also have Islam and Buddhism and Sikhism and Janism.

Christianity also, but very little. There are many resistant to Jesus’ gospel.

I am Vasu. My own family was from South India. We were Hindu, and very proud. We were very strict, following all the rituals and rites.

I am the youngest of seven children. My aunt, she had no children. They all died. So, my grandmother convinced my father to give me to my aunt to raise as her own. So, my aunt became my foster mother.

Soon after, my father was transferred for his job. I did not visit until I was eight-years-old. Then, each time I visited, I noticed they acted less and less like Indians. They were behaving like Christians. My father had met one of the few Christians and heard the gospel and believed.

But as I grew I did not. My aunt and I believed my father’s family had been defiled. But we were proud to be Hindu.. Vishnu was my main god. I would sing his praises from my heart. I was a very good singer. I was known as very pious in my practice.

But my father and my family were praying for me. God answered their prayers and I met some Christians who told me about Jesus. But I did not listen to them. I would argue with them from all I knew about my Hindu gods. But then one day they convinced me to go with them to a meeting… a church meeting… though I did not know that was what it was.

VASU (cont.)
There they were singing, and, as I said, I love to sing and was very good. The singing was Indian, not Western. They were traditional Indian songs, but the words were different. They were about the Christian God, not the Hindu gods.

So, I sang, and I listened. I heard the Scriptures read. The preacher taught your righteousness is like filthy rags. He said to give up all our rites and rituals and practices because they could not save.

I started reading the Scriptures, learning more and more, and all the time, my father and my family are praying for me. The Word is powerful. It has the power to transform lives, and slowly it transformed mine. I saw I was not righteous. I could not be righteous. But even so, Jesus would forgive me. So, I eventually believed, and knew this was true.

My aunt and my cousins were very angry. They were hating me, saying now I was defiled. They said they should send me away, back to my father, and they did. My father received me and was very happy, and now I am happy.

I live in North India, now. I am a pastor and evangelist and work so more and more who were like me can know the God who forgives and saves. But this is not easy work. There are many who do not want the gospel we share.

I was in a village, myself and another brother. God had given us great favor there. Two families had listened to the gospel and believed. But this caused trouble. Many in the village were very upset, they reported we had deceived these two families and converted them to Christianity.

This is illegal. Our government makes conversion illegal. So, village leaders reported us to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the RSS, the National Patriotic Organization. They want all India to be only Hindu. They hate Christians, just like I had when I was young, but worse. Even our prime minister is from this group.

So, they reported us to RSS and trapped us inside the home we were visiting. They were making plans to beat us or drag us out and kill us when RSS arrived.

VASU (cont.)
But two constables arrived first. They led us out of the home, to our cars. The crowd protested but had no proof we were converting. So, the police had to let us go. But one man grabbed me. He said, “I will send your dead body to the south, and I will cut your shoulders from here to here. Make your coffin ready.” This is what it is like.

It is in the Indian constitution that anyone can accept any religion on his own. We have that freedom, or we are supposed to have that freedom. But this is getting harder and harder in our India today. But I know this is not only true for us who were Hindu. This is true for others from other religions who convert by faith in Jesus.

My name is Sundara, and this is my wife, Shanti.

About ten years back, I was a preacher of Islam. Since it was illegal to convert anyone who was Hindu, I formed a team to focus on converting Christians to Islam.

Through these efforts, I met one Christian who was very strong in his faith and able to give me answers for all of my accusations and arguments. He would bring other Christian apologists to meet with us, and we would debate for many hours.

Through them I met a man who had converted from Islam to Christianity. So, he had a very great understanding of both religions and began to talk to me about how Islam was not true. He asked me questions about the Quran and Muslim belief I had never asked before.

I began to study more and more. However, the results of my study were not what I expected. My research was primarily to do with salvation, and I realized that there is salvation in Christ in the Bible as compared to Muhammad in Quran.

From that time forth, I started basing my faith on Christ and my faith on Muhammad decreased.

I never knew the name of Christ even though I studied in the Islamic school and Jesus is written about in the Quran. When I met Sundara, he introduced me to a Christian family from the Muslim background. They would explain the Scriptures to me, but I never believed them. Then I asked Sundara if he was a Christian and if his belief in Christ was true. He said, “You, yourself, examine the Scriptures and find the truth.”

Then I started reading the Quran and the Bible together. In the Quran I found a lot of fundamentalism and violence, but in the Bible I found a message of love toward one another. Slowly, the Bible started changing my life.

We had a lot of problems in our lives, but the Muslim people never helped us or supported us. But the Christians, they would always help. They opened their homes to us and helped us. I realized how great the love of God is. Then, finally, I realized that God was in Christ Jesus. I put my faith in Christ and realized God had chosen me to be His vessel.

We have faced a lot of opposition. Our families want to convert us back to Islam. We have also faced trouble from some fundamentalist groups. They have threatened us, that they will harm us, or even kill us, if we do not convert back. We have even had to flee our city for a time because of these threats, but I am not scared about that kind of persecution.

It is God who provides for us. It is God who protects us. What can man do to us? God has been faithful to us and will keep being faithful. That is why I am not frightened. I know that God is with us.

We will go wherever, to whomever. We will do this in the love of Jesus because Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” We desire that people who are perishing would find eternal life.

I desire more and more to work among Muslims in a contextualized manner. I ask that you pray for others to join me in that work, others from India or from other areas, for God to call them to come.

I pray those people who come to Christ will be together, will have unity. That new believers would be encouraged, and that they would work together to serve the Lord in the coming days.

In India we all respect a man called Ghandi, who we honor as father of our nation. He read the Bible and adopted the knowledge of Lord Jesus Christ. But, he never preached, he never declared to India that he learned from Holy Bible. So even in the schoolbooks, even today’s generation read Jesus sayings as the saying of Ghandi. So, it is Jesus who taught nonviolence to the whole world, which our national leader learned and adopted and practiced. If Ghandi was so good by using one word from the Bible of Jesus Christ, how much more if you used the entire teachings of Jesus Christ, then the entirety of India would be transformed. So, what Ghandi failed, we would like to do that and transform India. That’s what my prayer for the people of India, that they should all know the teachings of Jesus, which transforms life.

VASU (v.o.)
So, we, your Christian brothers and sisters, we ask you to join us, to pray for us, and to pray for India.
