Project Main Details
This piece will be a short-from, informational look at Christian persecution. We're aiming for a professional, news-style piece that will inform the public of historical and current events that have effected Christians. The tone would be matter-of-fact and informative. A relaxed, but poignant look at a serious topic. Please shoot me an email if you have any questions! Throughout the centuries, the geography of persecution has shifted. The methods of violence have changed. Yet just as Jesus promised, Christian persecution has been a global constant for nearly 2000 years.
But what about today? What does the persecuted church look like in the 21st century?
Beatings. Torture. Confinement. Rape. Imprisonment. Slavery. Discrimination. Ostracism. Forced marriage. Death.
According to The Pew Research Center, 75% of the world’s population live in areas with severe religious restrictions. Christians in more than 95 countries face persecution directly from their governments simply because of their faith in Jesus Christ.
Each month, 322 Christians around the world are killed for their faith. 214 churches are destroyed. And over 700 acts of violence are performed against Christians for professing their faith.
With hundreds of millions paying the price for their faith in Jesus each year, Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world.
And right now, an estimated 100 million Christians worldwide are at risk of persecution.
Most of the population of these at-risk Christians can be found in the 10/40 window, the area of Asia and Africa between 10th and 40th degrees of latitude. The 10/40 Window is populated by people who are predominantly Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, animist or atheist. Many governments in this region are formally opposed to Christian work of any kind within their borders.
The past decade has seen an unprecedented shift in unrest and violence towards Christians. The rise of ISIS in Iraq and Syria has created one of the largest refugee crises in history, displacing millions of Christians. Believers who have stayed in this area have been forced to either renounce their faith or die in brutal and barbaric ways, including crucifixion and decapitation.
Kidnappings in Nigeria. Labor camps in North Korea. Mob violence in India and Pakistan. Beheadings in Libya. With this rising unrest, 2015 was considered by human rights groups to be the “worst year in modern history for Christian persecution”—and things are only getting worse. But what exactly does the persecuted Christian face in this modern age? As an individual, what does it look like to suffer for Christ today?
We’ve gathered some of their stories.
(excerpts from Waleed, Hani, Walaa, Abdallah, etc)
1 Corinthians 12:26 says that we are one body. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
Matthew 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.
