Water covers three quarters of the surface of the earth, a vast playground for the sailor to explore. Many of the world’s most scenic destinations are only accessible from a sea or ocean, or are best enjoyed from the water. From a quiet afternoon in the middle of a lake, an overnight or a weekend with family and friends to the grand challenge of an ocean crossing, sailing offers something for everyone. The American Sailing Association is the authority on keelboat sailing education in the United States. With its unparalleled network of professional sailing schools and instructors, the ASA makes sailing safe, fun and accessible to everyone. We can show you how the sailing lifestyle is not only thrilling, but also affordable. Our goal is to get you sailing quickly, but with plenty of practice to ensure you do so safely and with confidence.
Exert from 20 minute online paid course:
By learning how a sailboat works, the common commands used to steer one and some basic sailing terminology, you’ll be able to actively participate in the magic of sailing—making the boat go where you want it to! With two thirds of the Earth’s surface covered in water, the possibilities are endless!
Remember, the purpose of this course is to make your next sailing trip more enjoyable. The only way to fail is to not go sailing after finishing this short course. So have fun! , We’ll see you on the water.
Underlying every watercraft, from a rowboat on a lake to the
mightiest aircraft carrier, is the hull, the watertight floating
body of the boat that gives it form and houses or supports every other part of the boat.
The deck encloses the top of the hull and is generally horizontal. Most sailboat larger than about 25 feet have space below the deck used for sleeping, cooking and so forth. To go below the deck, you’ll have to pass an opening in the full called the companionway
