The average person needs 2000-2500 calories per day to function at a normal level. Both plants and animals will provide the calories, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins needed. Most insects are rich in protein and fat. Insects with bright colors should not be eaten, as they might be toxic. Plants, roots, nuts, and seeds provide a source of protein and natural oils. The following are all edible:

• Inner bark of poplar, willow, birch, and conifer trees
