Why Spy?
Espionage in an Era of Insecurity

It’s the crack of dawn, and like every day of the year, the

Director of National Intelligence delivers the Presidential

Daily Brief-- the definitive intelligence report assessing

security threats to the United States.

It’s a stark assessment of our nation’s vulnerability to attack

or intrusion that’s been authenticated, analyzed, and

It’s countless hours of work performed by 17 intelligence

It is also the beginning of the President’s day.

This is dawn in America.

Political turmoil, devastating economic crises, international

skirmishes—this is the stuff of the PDB—the Presidential

Daily Brief. The President receives the brief and must act

on it--shaping policies that will define our place in the world.

The weight is on his shoulders.

So, where does the whole cycle of intelligence process

It often begins with the work of undercover intelligence

officers and their agents.

Why spy?

Why risk lives in order to obtain secrets?

To gain an upper hand.

To know what your adversary is planning to do before he

does it.

We live in a dangerous world but spying can reduce the

Intelligence is the first line of defense.

Espionage is everywhere.

In conflicts, war, business, government, sports.

We even see depictions of it on TV, in books and video

games, and Hollywood films.

But the real world of espionage is far more complex .

It is conducted without borders, without limits--behind the

curtains, sight unseen. Sometimes information is gathered

openly, but frequently it’s through covert actions.-- that are

undertaken at the direction of the president.

For many, spying is a way of life.

Engineers, scientists, analysts, foreign language experts,

writers, teachers, pilots, biologists, computer specialists –

soldiers and sailors…men and women.

For millennia, we have spied - trying to learn what our

enemies plan to do before they do it.

Today spies spy to identify…

To identify
To observe
To monitor
To learn
To steal
To acquire
To influence
To intercept
To decode
To thwart
To confront
To prevent
To preempt
To protect
To defend
To secure
To inform
To analyze
To evaluate
To know

We spy so that we can know.

When we know, we can prepare …

…prepared so we can be safe.

Our history has been shaped by spies.

General Washington depended on spies to win the

American Revolution.

In Europe and the Pacific, spying was vital to winning World

War II.

Today, our President relies on spying to inform him about

decisions being made around the globe.

Like in the Middle East--where conflicts rage, testing the

delicate political balance that fosters peace and freedom.

We spy to prevent the flow of money to terrorist groups.

to free kidnap victims, to stop drug trafficking, to inhibit

cyber theft.

Now, you are about to enter this clandestine world—to

learn how to spy, to learn the secret history of history.

There are secrets everywhere and you hold some of them.

It is now time for you to identify…

Remember, this might be dangerous--we are talking about

infiltrating and deceiving an enemy. Stealing their secrets.

Prepare well for your mission

Be smart, be careful.

And…keep it secret.

You will be making history.
