A hearing instrument is always the first step in getting a better hearing situation. We all know that there are a lot of good hearing instrument on the market, they help a lot of people every day. The obstacle with hearing instruments is that they only have a limited operating range where they can improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The easiest way of improving the SNR is to move closer to the sound source; with a hearing instrument this is easier said than done. Comfort Digisystem microphones can be placed anywhere, as close to the wanted sound source as needed.
To receive the signal from the microphone we need a receiver. The latest receiver in the Comfort Digisystem family is called Micro Receiver DT20. This receiver can be attached via an audio shoe to the hearing aid, used in a streamer and plugged into a cochlea implant or bone anchored hearing aid.
This is an example of what a hearing aid can do, the first bars are showing the original sound. The speech is at a level, let’s say 60 dB, the noise is 3 dB less=57 dB. The hearing aid is adding amplification to get the sound audible for the user, together with the amplification and compression the hearing aid is processing the sound with noise reduction, directional microphones and feedback cancellation. With an optimum fitting and sound processing a hearing aid can imporve the signal to noise ration with maximum 3 to 6 dB, so adding amplification the speech in the second example would be 65 dB and the noise is 59 dB. The SNR is improved with maybe 3 dB=6 dB since the SNR was 3 from the beginning, and adding more amplification the SNR will stay at +6dB even if the speech is 70 dB.
