Voices for Museum Installation on Prohibition
Steven here from Voice123. I was asked to post a project today for a local New York City gig.

You MUST be able to make it to Manhattan, NY to record in a studio on August 27th.

The project is a museum installation about Prohibition. We need 4 "temperance" speeches of the time recreated.

(Scripts are attached below)

* Prohibition period sound voice
* A GREAT performance...NOT a direct re-creation of the historical figure's voice.

The voices would be used in the exhibition and possibly in online versions of the exhibits (not sure whether any of these will go online or not).

Frances Willard - Male, mid-30's to 50's...powerful speaking voice

Richmond Hobson - Male, 40's to 50's...stiff and formal...southern

Frances Willard - Male, mid-30's to 50's...powerful speaking voice

There are half a million steady drinkers, behind this a million moderate drinkers, behind them two million occasional drinkers, behind them all little boys go tramp, tramp, tramp to a drunkard’s tomb; and remember these unfurling ranks, for they are always full. Some ladies say to me with all sobriety…”I wish the best in the world for your grand cause—I hope it will succeed but then I have no boys.” Perhaps you have daughters—if you have not, somebody has and somebody has boys. If you have daughters and not sons try to fathom the unfathomable lessons of these words: “A drunkard’s wife.”

There is a war about this in America, a war of mothers and daughters, sisters and wives. There is another sort of war….There is a war between the rum shops and religion. They stand over against each other, unsurmountable and unalterable foes…We have an irrepressible conflict, a war to the knife and the knife to the hilt. Only one can win, the question is which one is it going to be?

Richmond Hobson - Male, 40's to 50's...stiff and formal...southern

In our great cities like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, the ravages upon the average character have been so great, so many degenerates have already been produced, that the degenerate and corruptible vote not only holds the balance of power between the two great political parties and can dictate to both, but actually holds a majority of votes, so that honest and efficient self-government is now impossible.

At the present rate of growth of cities over country life, if no check is put on the spread of alcoholic degeneracy, the day cannot be far distant when liberty in great states must go under. It will then be but a question of time when the average standard of character of the nation’s electorate will fall below the inexorable minimum, and liberty will take her flight from America. And if America falls, the world will be undone and the human race will be doomed to go down from degeneracy into degeneracy till the Almighty in his wrath wipes the accursed thing out.

William Jennings Bryan “Prohibition Address

Let the liquor dealer compensate the mother for the son he has taken away from her; let him compensate the wife for the husband of whom he has robbed her; let him compensate the children for the father whom he has first transformed into a brute and then driven to suicide. Let him compensate those whom he has wronged by restoring to them the priceless value of homes ruined and lives wrecked, and then society will be glad to compensate him for whatever pecuniary loss he may suffer by the closing of a business which he knew to be harmful—a business which can not thrive except as the community suffers.

Billy Sunday – The “Booze” Speech

It is my opinion that the saloon keeper is worse than a thief and a murderer. The ordinary thief steals only your money, but the saloonkeeper steals your honor and your character. The ordinary murderer takes your life, but the saloonkeeper murders your soul.

The saloon is an infidel. It has no faith in God; has no religion. It would close every church in the land. It would hang its beer signs on the abandoned altars. It would close every public school. It respects the thief, and it esteems the blasphemer; it fills the prisons and penitentiaries. It despises heaven, hates love, and scorns virtue. It tempts the passions. Its music is the song of a siren. Its sermons are a collection of lewd, vile stories.
