New products are critically important to the success of Vivay skincare, accounting for 70% of sales growth in a typical year. Marketing plans focused on new products drive sales growth, reduce cannibalization and increase our return on marketing investment.

The idea for ********************* was driven by the insight that, despite the recent popularity of skin care regimen kits, there were none in the market that specifically addressed the delicate skin around the eye.

After extensive R&D, followed by additional consumer testing, ***********************was launched in February 2010.

The marketing plan included heavy TV support, print and online media, trade promotion, coupons and both direct to consumer and professional sampling programs.

Despite heavy TV support at the onset of launch, Eye Energizer had a rough start. Distribution took 5 weeks to reach maximum levels. Consumers driven to try ***************by the TV campaign were unable to find the product on shelves. This timing mishap resulted in a low ROI for TV during the first 5 weeks.

Once hitting full distribution, **************was off and running. A media campaign featuring tv, print and online elements drove awareness and yielded significant halo benefits for the franchise.

Trade promotions and coupons helped to reduce pricing barriers to trial.

6 months into the launch************** was faced with a new set of problems…competition, and trade support reduction.

Like other skincare regimen kits, ************* suffered from low repeat. Those who bought the product when it was first released were not coming back for refills. One key driver was the introduction of competing products, ******************* and one of our own, *******************

Other consumers grew tired of the regimen and just stopped using it.

In addition to low repeat, trade support was significantly reduced as retailers started to feature the newest product launches.

At Target, ************* experienced a 30% drop in features and 50% drop in displays. So, for consumers who had not yet tried ************* or tried it initially with a promotion, there were more price barriers to purchase.

Product sampling efforts had mixed success. Professional sampling drove credibility and increased trial.

Health Club sampling, however, hit the wrong target and had little to impact.

The lessons learned in this product launch story provide valuable insights we can apply to future product launches to maximize return on marketing investment. For additional information please contact your marketing research manager. Thanks for watching.
