The movement of swarms, flocks and schools is inspiring a range of new approaches. Swimming in tight formation helps fish to reduce drag and conserve energy.

This principle is inspiring software-controlled wind-farms to fine-tune the orientation of turbines in ways that boost output.

In the urban jungle, the power grid must respond to the needs of new buildings, demand surges and extreme weather.

With G.E. technology, buildings can sense and relay their energy needs to the grid, which in turn can power down inessential equipment or bring new supplies online.

Thanks to smart communication, each element is connected, and the entire system performs at its best.
