Texas Hero Awards: Award winners
Victor Garza, thoughtful voter
When I first moved from Oklahoma to Texas and got registered to vote here, I realized I had a new job ... to be prepared to elect judges. But how should I choose? It wasn't totally easy. First thing I had to do was to figure out my best sources of unbiased information–and that took some doing. Seems like lots of people use harsh words when they talk about judges, but sometimes it just means that they don’t feel a judge prefers “their” side. The more I read up on it, the more I figured out that we need an independent judiciary, not beholden to anybody. A judge’s job is not to please people, actually, but to protect the Texas constitution and run a fair courtroom. My job is to vote on whether I think the judge is qualified and impartial–and to do that job, it takes a bit of homework.
