Dry mill corn ethanol production facilities have come to rely on the sale of distillers’ corn oil as part of the plant’s overall operational strategy. The recovery and sale of corn oil is so profitable, in fact, that today nearly every ethanol plant in the U.S. yields at least some of this valuable co-product, enabling them to increase plant profitability by as much as 20%.

The most common “first generation” method of extracting corn oil is by installing a centrifugal separator in or after the evaporator train. This separator recovers oil from the concentrated thin stillage using a combined process that may involve chemical addition, heat and centrifugal force.
These first generation technologies are valuable to the plant, but efficiency and yields are limited, producing an average of point four to point six pounds of corn oil per bushel of corn ground. In addition, the mid-evaporator technologies often carry high operating expenses including chemical usage, royalties and litigation.
