Clorox started by sharing research methodology with in-country associates throughout Latin America, and leveraged Walmart expertise during collaborative work sessions. It soon became clear that each country had key differences in their shopping experiences, and to unlock the opportunities we had to understand them better and look for creative solutions for the Home Cleaning Category.
Four key trends emerged in the Latin American retail sector:
• Formats are shrinking. And the new winners are small format Soft Discounters, Small Cash & Carry, and Convenience Stores.
• Small formats are growing fast. With retailers placing more emphasis on store location to service the customer better.
• Focus is on serving all customers, from all income groups.
• The Internet, e-commerce and multi-channel are changing customer behaviors and this is requiring a shift in retail interactions
The good news is that Walmart is in position to leverage these trends.
We proved some things we expected....
• Walmart is capturing most trips to “bodega-type” stores from the traditional channel.
• The customer is expecting lower prices than the neighborhood store, trusted brands, and nearby location.
There are also interesting surprises…
• Walmart’s emerging formats are capturing the bottom, the middle and the top of the socio-economical level pyramid.
• In Latin America, Home Cleaning is a destination category, its products appearing in most emerging format shopping baskets.
We believe this research is just the beginning of a remarkable opportunity.
By working closely with Walmart and Clorox, we hope to learn more about the larger market, as well as the important variations between the countries and regions of Latin America. Lessons that can help us all over the globe. We have already started the collaboration process with important alignment sessions in Argentina, Chile Central America and Mexico
