There may be no concept more central to the American way of life than that of Free Enterprise, and yet the lack of understanding of our economic system by the general American population is appalling.
According to the National Endowment for the Humanities, large numbers of students actually believe that the words…“From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” are from the U. S. Constitution, rather than the edict of Communist philosopher Karl Marx.
National surveys find that almost two-thirds of all Americans do not know that in times of inflation money does not hold its value.
Barely one in three adults realize that society must make choices about how to use resources.
Half of adults and about two-thirds of students do not understand that the stock market brings together those who want to sell stocks with those who want to buy stocks.
To make effective decisions in the marketplace and in the voting booth, Americans need at least a basic understanding of the economic system in which we live and work.
Because, whether we understand it or not, the economy affects almost every aspect of our lives.
Philanthropist Burkett Miller realized the importance of helping citizens understand the principles which form the foundation of the American economic system.
To address this problem of economic illiteracy, in 1977, an initial bequest from the estate of Mr. Miller established the Scott L. Probasco Jr. ************************ at the **************************************.
The *************** is to develop through the educational field an understanding of the role of private enterprise in the American way of life.
