EPISODE 201 – THE RHINOS OF OL PEJETA

NARRATOR 10:00:00
A species pushed to the brink of extinction: today Jean heads to Kenya where efforts to save the black rhinoceros may be the best hope for reviving the species. There he joins a major operation to mark and relocate several rhinos.

JDP
We are basically waiting for this rhino to wake up so we can push it into the cage.

NARRATOR
Working against the clock in a wild environment the group takes on one of Africa’s biggest and most dangerous animals.

JDP
She is obviously very, very agitated.

NARRATOR
This is: Ultimate Africa.

TITLE SEQUENCE 10:00:38

ACT ONE 10:01:08

NARRATOR 10:01:13
In the last sixty years the rhinoceros’ almost been hunted out of existence. Its most dangerous predator – man.

JDP
Between 1970 and 2003 black rhinos numbers in Africa declined from 65,000 individuals to 2,200. This is mainly due to poaching. It’s ironic that the defense mechanism of a rhino became his biggest downfall. Although this rhino horn came from a rhino that died naturally, rhino horns are highly sought after in places like Yemen for dagger handles, and in the Far East for aphrodisiacs.

NARRATOR 10:01:48
There are two major species of rhino in Africa – Black and White.
The Black Rhino is native to Kenya.
Thirty year ago 20,000 Black Rhino roamed the Kenyan countryside. Today, there are less than 500.

JDP
In the late 80’s, early 90’s Kenya realized the extent of the rhino problem, and wild rhinos were moved into smaller sanctuaries than can act as safe havens for them.

NARRATOR 10:02:18:02
One of those safe havens is Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
It’s one of the biggest private game reserves in Kenya, home to most of Africa’s major wild species.

At the heart of the conservancy are nearly 80 Black Rhino.

Even in this protected environment they are under serious threat from poachers, and so the conservancy has 150 rangers—a ratio of almost 2 to 1--who are out every day keeping track of them.

In partnership with the Kenyan government Ol Pejeta runs a comprehensive breeding program for the black rhino that involves micromanaging the species.
