V.O. - It was the decade of the 70’s
And more than any other sport in that decade,
Horse Racing reached a milestone that to this
day 35 historic years later, that pinnacle of
achievement has not been repeated.
Now the longest stretch without a
Triple Crown winner in the history of the sport.
INTRODUCE TITLE: (music shift)
“HEART, HOPE & GLORY” – A Two Minute Ride Into History…
Flash forward to 2013 – 35 years later (some kind of cool time transition – dates and names of all the close contenders, horses and riders, who won first two races – with photos and videos) and all three jockeys present day (Derby, Preakness, Belmont) eagerly wait in anticipation to induct another years Triple Crown hopeful, into their elite fraternity.
In all walks of life and especially in
sports there are game changers,
Heart, Hope &Glory is a tribute to three
such game changers who have devoted
their lives to horse racing and continue
to serve as ambassadors of the sport.
Their Triple Crown achievement fuels the
hearts of every jockey who has saddled up
each and every morning for the last
35 years and is the glory that every jockey
riding aspires and hopes for!
SHIFT IN MUSIC:
What must it be like to be a champion and
carry the distinction and title of
Triple Crown Winner for over
30 years, does that weight ever get heavy?
What's it like to walk away from the
Winners Circle and know that you've
achieved the highest goal that any jockey can reach?
What do you do with that notoriety back in
the real world, along with the ups and downs of daily life?
How do you give back to the sport that's
has rewarded you with such an honor.
And what responsibility does that sport
have to those who keep the dreams and hope alive.
From their diverse and humble beginnings,
Heart, Hope &Glory will look at the career
histories and the individual lives of these
three amazing athletes and how they raised
the bar in horse racing by winning the
Triple Crown and the hearts of sports
fans all over the world.
HISTORY/BIO OF EACH WITH IMAGES AND PHOTOS TO SUPPORT:
Had he been a little taller, it’s quite likely
Ron Turcotte would have sought a career
as a lumber jack in the mountains of Canada.
Finding his way into the saddle took
many turns and a twist of fate for Jean Cruguet.
From growing up in an orphanage, first wanting
to be a boxer, then serving in French army,
his path was an unlikely one, but lady luck entered his life and…
As if he had any choice in the matter, Steve Cauthen
was born to ride, the son of a trainer and a farrier in
Walton, Kentucky around horses, which, along with his small size,
made horse racing a logical career choice.
Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in America
has come to signify the highest achievement any jockey
and horse could aspire to, whether in the US or
anywhere in the world. Awarded in 1919 the first
American Triple Crown went to Johnny Loftus riding Sir Barton.
Three races, three riders and over three decades later...
Now three decades later and for the first time together in front of the cameras, these three athletes will share their stories with each other and with the world. Comparing notes on some of the magnificent horses they have ridden, the fascinating people they have met and worked with throughout their professional careers. Of course it wouldn’t be complete without breaking down and examining the 9 Triple Crown races run between the three.
What went through their minds?
How did their lives and the lives of those close to them changed the instant they crossed the finish line at Belmont.
How do they feel now as they reflect back on that glorious time in their lives?
Along the way the film we'll visit with a host of industry greats, old friends, family and colleagues who will provide a unique and personal perspective about who these three gentlemen really are. Giving their take on what impact they've had on the sport and those around them.
Through this exploration of the sport and it’s history we will find that ultimately it comes down to a few select individuals who exceed all expectations leaving us with iconic sporting events and imprinted moments to savor for a lifetime.
“Heart, Hope & Glory” will offer a rare insight into the hearts of three competitive athletes and will show how passion, dedication, hope and of course; incredible talent took these three jockeys on a two minute ride into history…
Like a fine wine that has seasoned with age, each sip of this tale is to be savored, as we may never again be privy to such a treat!
