With strong economic growth over the years, a very high life expectancy and a nearly universal literacy rate, Sri Lanka is progressing.
Despite the progress achieved, big challenges remain. One of the keys to maintaining a steady and sustainable development that does not undermine peace is to encourage the creation and development of entrepreneurs and SMEs.
There are more than 40,000 SMEs and one hundred thousand plus micro enterprises in Sri Lanka.
They generate more than 70% of Sri Lanka’s GDP and employ more than 8 million people in the country.
However, SMEs and entrepreneurs have to overcome many challenges daily in order to reach sustainable growth.
➢ They face lack of access to finance
➢ Lack of access to information
➢ Low level of technology or managerial skills
In order to help SMEs and entrepreneurs overcome these challenges, IFC has created the SME Toolkit, an internet-based Platform that provides training and management tools that enables them to achieve their true business potential.
In 2008, IFC and Dialog became partners to promote the SME Toolkit among retailers all around Sri Lanka. The partnership provided training on the Toolkit and promoted the role of the infomediary, a social entrepreneur that acts as an advocate and helps disseminate the content of the Toolkit among districts.
Since the DVD program started, DIALOG and IFC have already trained 5.100 retailers around Sri Lanka and promoted the SME Toolkit in English, Sinhala and Tamil. Results achieved have been astonishing:
• Total revenues of Dialog increased 32% across all geographic locations
• 3520 new jobs were created (2 per every trained retailer)
• 90% of the retailers trained expanded and diversified their business
• Overall increase of retailers’ revenues was of 40%
IFC and Dialog’s current objective is to train 5,000 more retailers by December 2012, 30% of which come from conflict areas, and to go beyond DIALOG retailers so other entrepreneurs can also benefit from the program.
