Project Main Details
The aesthetic is minimalist, psychological sci-fi inspired by films like 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Solaris (1972).
The main antagonist is the victim of an experiment gone wrong - three minds trapped in one body, with different minds speaking at different times. Since the character's face is never shown in the game it won't be made explicit to the player that this is just one person - we want them to question the identity of the other person/s.
To achieve this we'd like to try using one actor to play all three voices, and to strike a balance where we have enough difference between the performances to raise the question, but enough similarity to tie them back up at the end.
The characters are:
Capable, scared, human
The scavenger kicks off the entire story when he arrives on Theseus intent on plundering it. Unfortunately for him he meets the two surviving residents of the station, Doctors Chalmers and Dennett, and is convinced by them to use the Swapper device, leaving all three of them in the scavenger's body. The scavenger, when in control, is mostly terrified and confused.
Disarming, fatherly, zealous
Chalmers was one of the scientists who developed the Swapper, and is a dualist - he believes in souls. He's a friendly, very persuasive man, though hides a fierce zeal for what he believes. One has the sense when speaking with him that too long a conversation would have you agreeing with anything he told you was true.
Disdainful, calculating, realist
Dennett is colder and more distant. He’s not interested in rhetoric or persuading the masses - he’s interested in being right. He has a short temper and a long memory, and the player is going to encounter him on a bad day. None of this is to say that his fiercely materialist approach to the mind is wrong. 2013-01-22 15:38:30 GMT 2013-01-25 17:15:01 (GMT 0) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London Yes (click here to learn more about ) Closed - Note: This project was manually closed by the voice seeker before it reached its original deadline. 0 0 0 direct invitation(s) have been sent by the voice seeker resulting in 0 audition(s) and/or proposal(s) so far. Scavenger Sample Line 1
Chalmers has manipulated the scavenger into using the Swapper and ejecting the player from the station, and wants him to go further.
...what you're telling me isn't possible. I want to know who I just ejected into space! …. You can't ask me that. I won't do it. ….
Scavenger Sample Line 2
Here the Scavenger has been driven mad by the presence of Chalmers and Dennett in his mind. He is about to attempt suicide.
Why do you insist on witnessing this?! Do you want to know what it is like to wonder if you're really YOU, and to suspect that you are not? No, who would? I can't tell if I still exist! *Sigh* There's only one way to be sure.
Chalmers Sample Line
Chalmers has just taken control of the body, and meets the player for - as far as he's concerned - the first time. Here he's friendly, polite, but dismissive - he has more exciitng things to be doing. Aside from the second sentence he makes no real reference to the goings on aboard station.
Who are you?! I beg your pardon, this place changes people. My name is Chalmers. Listen, I used to work here, and I need to get to the Mind-Sci Lab rather urgently. Excuse me.
Dennett Sample Line 1
Dennett has taken control. Being an intellectual elite type he refuses to trust the player, preferring to threaten him into doing what he needs (regardless the reasonable ends he intends).
I had hoped to reason with you, but trusting others to see sense is how we ended up like this, so coercion it is. I am going to land this station on the planet below. Unless the solar panels are detached first Theseus will be destroyed. Simple enough for you? Detach the panels if you want to live.
Dennett Sample Line 2
Dennett is usually proved right in the end, but he's accustomed to not being believed. He has serious reservations about the use of the Swapper device, and bitterness at everyone's continuing use of it.
I don't know what you think you know about that device you're so nonchalantly wielding, but it's wrong. Still, you wouldn't be the first to disagree with me.
In this scene from the end of the game the personalities begin to argue amongst themselves. Dennett has implemented landing procedures in an attempt to save them all.
That's it, we can land! Meet me at command, this will be worth seeing.
Only if we live through it.
['You' in second sentence adresses the player, who is looking on]
At least this way we have a chance. You, do you know how we survived here? What we had to give up to go on? Our SELVES. We traded them up for a couple of brains with extra magnetic shielding.
It wasn't that bad! We're still here, aren't we?
When half of you has been replaced I'm not sure how you'd ever know. And how DO you explain our current situation? Bad luck?
