United States, Connecticut, United States, New Jersey, United States, New York,
sign of Taurus the bull. // I never knew my father. // I never
knew that I was born out of wedlock until a relative of mine
got angry with me and said, “You grew up like a weed. You
don’t even belong to the family.” When I was taunted. I
began building up a defense by taking my aching heart away
from bad sounds. // I learned how to play the spirituals,
ragtime, the blues and boogie. // I’d sit at the piano for hours
and hours. Like you hear words, I hear music. // You know what happened to me? My mother // said at an early age I was seeing spirits. // I’ve gone through life like that, seeing various things. // I think // ESP // can be good // or it can be very bad. // Cause // you can’t control it.
AA MALE: I was offered a job playing with the TOBA show. // I was disgusted when I // saw they had a woman playing piano. // (At) rehearsal // I never heard nothing like that in my life. // Mary Lou // had that left hand and hit it just like a man. // (But) // she was awful quiet. // Very strange. // Well, she use to claim that she could “see” things. I know nothing about that but // with us being in music, // that threw us together. // In practically all of the shows that we were traveling, // you pick your favorite and // shack up // to cut expenses. And we did that until we married.
WHITE MALE: Usually, we’d play five or six arrangements in a set and each would be three minutes. But some of those arrangements Mary Lou Williams wrote, you would want to play for more than three minutes and the dancers would want you to, too.
