In 1957 Walt Disney announced with great fanfare that his studio was going to produce a musical feature film called “The Rainbow Road to Oz.” To promote the idea Walt enlisted his merry band of Mouseketeers, many of whom were to star in the film.

But Walt’s journey to Oz had begun long before then. Back in 1937 he looked into buying the rights to the Oz books. Nothing came of it. But when it came to a good story Walt had a memory longer than the yellow brick road, and in 1954 when the studio was flush with the success of Cinderella, he finally purchased the rights to 11 of Frank Baum’s books.

Walt immediately had a script written which he intended for television, but the production soon became too big for the small screen. Walt decided to produce a full-length live action musical feature film.

The film was not to be. The reasons have been lost to time. But Walt’s fascination with Oz did not end there. There were other projects, record albums, even a planned park attraction.

And Walt’s long and winding road to Oz traveled on into a new century. Finally ending with the production of “the Great and Powerful Oz” by the studio he created. A bold, beautiful and beguiling movie worthy of the great Wizard himself.
