The littlest mermaid's greatest pleasure was to listen to her grandmother tell tales of the human world above. The most wonderful thing of all, the little mermaid thought, was that Up Above flowers were scented, for at the bottom of the sea, they had no smell at all. Oh-and she loved to hear that fish flying among the trees sang beautifully. The fish, of course, were really little birds, but the grandmother called them fish because otherwise the mer-girls wouldn't have understood.
"When you are fifteen years old," said the grandmother to them, "you will each be allowed to rise up out of the sea, sit on a rock in the moonlight, and watch big ships sailing by. Then you will see human men and women, as well as forests and cities."
"Oh," she would think, "I cannot wait." But of course she had to.
"Grandmother, If human beings don't drown," asked the little mermaid, "can they live forever?"
"No," said her grandmother, "they must die too, though their lives are shorter than ours. We can live to three hundred years old, but when our lives come to an end we are turned into foam of the sea. We have no immortal souls, we never come to life again. Human beings, however, have souls that live forever. When the body has fallen to dust, the soul rises through the clear air and up to the shining stars.”
"Is there nothing I can do to win an immortal soul, grandmother?"
"Not unless a human loves you so much that you mean more to him than his own mother and father. Not unless he places his right hand in yours and vows to keep faith with you for all eternity. Then his soul will flow into you, yet he will keep his own. But of course that can never happen!" Up Above they think your fishtail is ugly. To be thought beautiful up there you have to have the two clumsy props they call legs!"
The little mermaid sighed and looked sadly at her fishtail.
"So let us be happy," said the old lady, "Let us swim about and enjoy the three hundred years of our lives. Then when you die, you can rest content as sea foam.”
