ON A JOURNEY TO VISIT AN UNCLE NEWLY SETTLED IN THE WESTERN REACHES OF NEW YORK STATE.
THE VISIT INCLUDED A TRIP TO SEE THE WONDER OF NIAGARA -- A PLACE STILL REMOTE AND LARGELY IN ITS NATURAL STATE.
YOUNG FREDERICK OLMSTED’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING AMERICA’S FIRST GREAT LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT WAS A LONG ONE.
HE TRIED FARMING, THEN TRAVELED AND WROTE OF HIS EXPERIENCES IN ENGLAND AND THE SLAVE HOLDING STATES OF THE AMERICAN SOUTH.
FINALLY, IN THE 1850’S, WITH LITTLE PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AT ALL, HE JOINED FORCES WITH ARCHITECT CALVERT VOX TO CREATE THE WINNING DESIGN FOR THE FIRST GREAT URBAN PARK IN AMERICA—NEW YORK CITY’S CENTRAL PARK.
