“Two days into our Mediterranean cruise, we woke early, headed up to the Sun Deck, cappuccino in hand, Vivaldi playing on the loudspeakers, to watch our yacht cruise through an amazing inlet of white limestone-cliffs to Bonifacio on the island of Corsica. This tiny one-way harbor marked the entrance to the walled town that peered down on us from its hilltop perch. The mega-yachts that were anchored here said something about the treasures we would find in this hidden port. The ingenious fortifications that successfully protected Bonifacio from invaders since the 9th century confirmed that it was special. After we disembarked from Le Ponant, we wandered through narrow cobblestone streets peering inside churches, open doors, sidewalk cafés and shops. Later, we shared delectable treats with our shipboard friends back on the Sun Deck. To experience it all with my mom and aunt, well that makes my memories of Bonifacio unforgettable and even more precious!”
“Thinking back to our experience at Dubrovnik still gives me the chills. Our local guide took us on a walk on top of the walls that surround most of the old city. The walls go back to the 15th century. The city was under threat of attack by the Turks and worried that the original walls , built up and modified many times over, did not offer enough protection. So they made the walls bigger and wider; in some places they are over 80 feet high. And history proved the people of Dubrovnik right – the walls were never breached during the Middle Ages. As we walked along, the views and the sense of history there were awesome. We could look out over the city and the Adriatic Sea. Inside the walls, was a sea of red-roofed buildings, winding streets made of stone, and all kinds of interesting nooks and crannies. Outside the walls was a sea of blue, the winding coastline and islands covered in green. Below we could see Tauck’s ship, L’Austral, docked far below, looking elegant. It was a bird’s eye view that we’ll never, ever, forget."
