Tampa Bay Stories
ZDLTK15207490308X
We are producing a total of 12 short 1 minute videos of well-known people in Tampa. Most of them are no longer alive. Three require an older man to read the narrations about them. These are about Robert Saunders (1921-2001), a civil rights leader, Robert Mugge (1852-1915), an entrepreneur who ran everything from parks to saloons, and Peter O. Knight (1889-1950) a corporate lawyer who helped develop Tampa's transportation systems.

We will also need character voices for Robert Saunders - dignified voice, and Robert Mugge, more playful voice)

Partial scripts:

Robert Saunders: In 1931, Florida’s NAACP field director, Harry T. Moore, was assassinated in his home in Mims, Florida, most likely by the Ku Klux Klan. Saunder’s was called upon to fill the job and bravely accepted.

During his tenure, he helped integrate Florida’s schools and traveled throughout the state to organize NAACP chapters and register black voters.

Robert Mugge: : He was always coming up with new schemes to make money and provide a service. While Tampa was the staging ground for the Spanish American War, he built a large saloon in one of the soldiers’ campgrounds. When he contacted Anheuser Busch about getting a trainload of beer, they said, “There will not be a war and we do not sell beer by the trainload.” But there was a war and he got his beer.

Peter Knight: As attorney for the Seaboard Line, created in 1903 as a result of rail mergers, he helped the company acquire almost all of Tampa’s downtown waterfront property. The waterfront soon bustled with activity around rail yards, warehouses, and loading docks.

Character Voice for Saunders: Favorite memories of mine included the jamboree I attended at Florida A&M College in Tallahassee…. We camped there on the Commons. College all of a sudden seemed something more important and accessible to me.

Character Voice for Mugge: “The way I’ve got it figured out, this hotel is a cross between a YMCA and a ten-story bar room.”
