Building Leaders Video
It’s been said that great leaders are...
...are born that way.
That their characteristics are innate.
As if the gifts of leadership can be passed through generations like the color of one’s of hair.
But, there’s no blood test for leadership.
No genetic marker has ever been found.
And it never will.
Because leadership is born...
From understanding. From facing obstacles and failing to overcome them, then facing them again and again until the obstacles are no more.
Leadership isn’t given. It’s learned.
We know this from the leaders we admire.
Like Colin Powell. Born in Harlem to immigrant parents. A self-admitted C-student, he joined the ROTC during college—where he said he “found himself”.
He learned leadership through two tours of duty in Vietnam...practiced it as the military’s highest ranking officer...and embodied it as Secretary of State.
We’ve seen it in Wes Moore, who struggled as a young man after the death of his father.
He learned leadership in military school. Refined it as a Rhodes Scholar. And then redefined it as an advocate for youth when he established a relationship with a young man jailed for murder.
It’s been proven by Li Cunxin. Born into extreme poverty...
...he learned leadership when he defected from Communist China...and took it to new heights by becoming one of the most accomplished ballet dancers in the world.
We have evidence from Robyn Benincasa, ...
...who learned about leadership by participating in extreme expedition-length sporting events—and has tested it everywhere from the Himalayan mountains to the jungles of Borneo.
And we’ve experienced it through Doc Hendley,...
...who learned leadership growing up in North Carolina, challenged its boundaries serving victims of genocide in Darfur, and honed it by starting a nonprofit to bring clean water to needy people around the world.
Now you can learn leadership, too—from these amazing leaders—as they share their stories of character, creativity and courage at the third annual St. Christopher’s Leadership Symposium, November 18th and 19th in Richmond. Be inspired. Be motivated. Be a leader. Learn more at********************
