Her strong work ethic was cultivated growing up on a farm in eastern Washington.
Using money she earned herself in 4H, she was the first in her family to graduate from college.
After working as a Citizen Legislator for 10 years, Cathy was first elected to Congress in 2004 and is now the Chair of the House Republican Conference.
Within the walls of the Capitol building – a home that has borne witness to the history of this nation since its earliest days – the trajectory of Cathy’s life was changed forever.
In 2005, she met and married retired Navy Commander Brian Rodgers. It wasn’t long before they welcomed their first child Cole, who came into their lives chomosomally enhanced! Cole has Trisomy 21, better known as Down Syndrome.
With this “lean in” challenge, Cathy and her husband learned more about life than any naval mission or public office could ever teach.
She is now a stuanch advocate for the differently abled and in 2007 co-founded and is currently a co-chair of the Congressional Down Syndrome Caucus with Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Congressman Pete Sessions.
Cathy works directly with the NIH to encourage increased funding for research benefitting people with Down syndrome, and she is co-sponsor of the ABLE Act and the Trisomy 21 Translational Research Parity Act.
And that is the focus of the Linda Crnic Institute.
Cole is now 6 years old, loves music, school and peanut butter!
He loves his little sister Grace, even though she gets in his stuff.
It seems the only word Cole doesn’t know is “Can’t”.
Cathy reflects that, “It takes only a single moment to change the course of a life forever, in ways that are both beautiful and unexpected.”
In that profound statement, echoes the resolution we ALL dedicate ourselves to.
We do know that with early intervention, good health, social integration, high expectations and determination, people with Down syndrome can reach their true potential.
People with Down sydnrome are smart, funny, stubborn, happy, sad, athletic – the same as all of us. They deserve all the oppportunities and experiences that others have but health issues are sometimes the biggest barriers to progress.
Because we can change that…we must.
Cathy truly is a rising star in American Politics. - - And Cole is certainly to be counted as her most important contributor.
That’s why The Global Down Syndrome Foundation is proud to announce Cole Rodgers as the 2013 Washington DC ambassador.
And for her dedication to improving the lives of all people with Down Syndrome, we are also honored to present Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers with the 2013 Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award.
