Talent will read for the part of both Peter and Teammates. Will need to deliver a finished voice track, including editing to sound like multiple people for the Teammates. PSL12-Scenario-Draft3.WR 5.23.11 Speaking for Special
Occasions "Peter’s MVP Acceptance Speech"
EXT. SUBURBAN PACIFIC NORTHWEST PIZZA PARLOR - NIGHT
Windows cast a warm glow from a restaurant/hangout called,
"Phil’s Pizza." We HEAR what sounds like chanting male
INT. PHIL’S PIZZA BACK PARTY ROOM - NIGHT
A BASEBALL PLAYER, late 20s, wearing a ball cap and a
T-shirt hot stamped, "Men’s Slow Pitch Softball" hands an MVP trophy to another player, PETER. Peter’s got a mop of brown hair topped with a New York Yankee baseball cap. They stand before their TEAMMATES who are chanting...
MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP!
NOTE: We view the speaker from (9) teammates’ point of view. We never see 8 of the 10 teammate faces, only the back of their shoulders, waists and heads, depending on where they are standing. They are silhouettes.
The baseball player leaves the floor to Peter. Peter is shy and gracious at first. He slips off his ball cap before he speaks. Peter has a Brooklyn, New York accent.
Wow, this is a shock. (Gets very formal) I’d like to thank the Academy...just kidding. But I do want to thank Phil’s Pizzera for sponsoring us and sponsoring this
party (gestures to someone off to the side.)
Teammates cheer and chant,
Phil, Phil, Phil, Phil...
PETER (CUTS IN)
I also want to thank all of you who
played with me and voted for me, I
even thank those who didn’t vote
for me. Heck, I voted for Luis.
Teammates laugh and clap.
Uh, there’s a saying, a quote by a
pretty famous Yankee’s manager, um,
Bob Lemon. He said, "Baseball was
made for kids, and grown-ups only
screw it up."
Peter breaks a smile. We HEAR a couple teammates agree.
Ain’ that the truth.
Yeah. Playin’ softball with you
guys is fun like when I was a kid.
A couple teammates shout out "Who Who’s from the song, "Who
Let The Dogs Out." Soon all the teammates break into song.
Who, who who. (Chorus) Who let the
dawgs out? Who, who who. Who let
the dawgs out? Who who who who
Peter takes in the commaraderie, even joins them for a few
bars, then motions for restraint.
Tonight, all night long, we tried
to wake up the bats... nothin’,
right? Um, I’m not gonna deny,
(suddenly comes alive) that it felt
good to finally get a piece a that
ball at the bottom of the ninth,
MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP!
Peter motions for them to pipe down.
No, no, no, you guys are
MVPs. Every single person on this
team is so valuable. Tonight was
amazin’. And, uh, the opposition,
they thought, they had the nerve to
think they were gonna shut us
out. (shakes his head) Not
Teammates cheer, whistle, hoot, holler. Peter points at a
Pettus deposited a homer into left
field a couple a feet to the right
of the foul pole.
Teammates hoop and holler and clap.
Score’s now two to ten. Yeah, we
got two, they got ten... so what.
(Points at JD) J.D. collects two
hits and a pair of RBIs finishin’
the season with a batting average a
Teammates roar with laughter, shove each other. Peter
gesters for them to simmer down.
I’m kiddin’, we all know better
than that. (points) Cooper, record
leader for stolen bases. (points)
Bobby, twelve ’n’zero season
pitching record... Opposition
thought they shut you guys down.
(shakes his head) Not tonight.
Teammates roar...whistles... a few staccato "Who, Who’s..."
PETER (WITH MOMENTUM)
All of us, pulled together in the
face of some pretty ugly lookin’
odds. But tell me, look me in the
eye and tell me; did any a you guys
think we were gonna lose?
Peter starts to shake his head. Teammates run with it. They
shout in unison.
PETER (HAND TO EAR)
What? I can’t hear you.
His teammates laugh. Peter cuts through the chatter.
What did happen tonight, however;
was a come back from a zero to nine
score in the top of the ninth... To
a ten to nine win in the bottom of
His teammates go wild, hollering, clapping, whistling...
Peter shouts over them... momentum builds.
And... (louder) And... a twelve and
0 (pronounce oh)league
More cheering... Peter motions for a chance to say one final
One final thing. One final note.
The guys finally simmer down.
And finally, most importantly what
happened tonight and every other
night that we’ve come together is
we had fun. (holds up MVP trophy)
This recognition, this award means
a lot to me. You all mean a lot to
me. Thank you.
