Songs of Defiance ZDLTK53308389048X
This is a one hour public television documentary about the history of Laulupidu, Estonia's extraordinary song festival that features as many as 30,000 singers on stage at the same time. Founded in 1869, this festival is part of the country's identity. The film follows an American children's choir that has earned the right to sing at this festival (very few foreign choirs are accepted), and the audience then learns about the festival and it's history through the experiences of these children in Estonia. The film is half concert film (featuring the 2009 Laulupidu) and half history film. It is largely the history that is narrated. For tone, we want a touch of gravitas (so that the audience believes the narrator truly knows this obscure history), but with a story-teller tone that is distinctly sympathetic and supportive of the Estonian story. This is not "objective" news. This is a celebration of an extraordinary event and culture. To see a trailer: ********************************

Singing has always been a part of Estonian culture, but since the 13th century outsiders have attempted to shape life here. Danes, Germans, Swedes, and Russians have all taken their turn at ruling this land.
In 1819, Czar Alexander of Russia freed Estonians from serfdom, well before the rest of the Russian Empire. This act granted Estonians a handful of basic human rights...and fueled the desire for independence.
In 1869, the first song festival was planned to officially commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Estonia's liberation from serfdom. But it also was a way to link culture, music, and national identity that formed a unique path to independence.
