As the UK moves towards a low carbon future it’s important that DNOs understand tomorrow’s challenges. At Electricity North West it’s a priority for us to anticipate the future needs of our customers as they adopt low carbon technologies such as heat pumps to heat their homes, electric vehicles and low carbon generation in the form of solar panels. As they become more reliant on electricity as a fuel source we must improve the supply of electricity to our customers in the safest, most cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways.
Currently, high voltage networks have an abundance of clever solutions to make them more efficient. However, 99.9% of our customers are connected at low voltage and as it stands low voltage networks don’t have the same level smart technologies to facilitate the connection of customers’ new Low Carbon Technologies. But, if we made them as efficient as the high voltage network, this would increase our ability to deliver network capacity to our customers to connect their new LCTs, save money, minimise fuel demand and reduce carbon.
Low voltage networks operate within set voltage parameters called statutory voltages. This is the voltage range at which we must deliver electricity to our customers. Electricity loses volts as it is distributed around the network. The volts at the farthest point from the substation will be lower than those closest to the substation so appliances close to the substation may use more electricity than those further away. This means they could cost more to run and generate higher CO2 emissions. The rate of voltage drop on networks changes throughout the day depending on what customers are doing.
