Six Sigma is a data-based decision-making methodology. You need to extract information from measurements and other facts in order to make good decisions. Statistical methods are extremely useful in this effort. So, let’s learn a little more of this subject.
Once you have established a good measurement system, you use it to collect data. What will you do with that data? First, look at the data using some of the fundamental ideas of statistics. These fundamentals play a part in all aspects of data. These fundamentals will provide a foundation for all the statistical analysis we will do in this and other modules in this training. This slide illustrates that the topic is commonly used in our daily work, in Define to discover and justify the opportunity, and in the Measure phases of Six Sigma methodologies.
The objective with this module is to introduce descriptive statistical concepts to help you see what the data is telling you. In this module, we will emphasize looking at the data to determine information from it. We will also describe some basic statistics that summarize the data.
Whenever you collect your data, the first thing you should do is plot it. The old saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words” applies very well to this recommendation. Most people can make conclusions about the data information better from a plot or chart rather than from a table of numbers. Then, when you summarize the data with statistics, it becomes more meaningful and useful. These are the topics we will cover in this module:
• Histograms and distributions
• Measures of center and spread
• Mean and median
• Range, standard deviation and variance
• Displaying of data
