learning about the world … for looking to the future
with hope and eagerness.
But for children with sickle cell disease, the future
is clouded with uncertainty. For these children,
tomorrow may bring terrible pain … a trip to the
hospital … and even premature death.
Unlike normal red cells, which are usually smooth
and donut-shaped, the sickled red cells cannot
squeeze through small blood vessels. Instead, they
stack up and cause blockages that deprive the
organs and tissue of oxygen-carrying blood.
This process produces periodic episodes of pain
and ultimately can damage tissues and vital organs
and lead to other serious medical problems. Many
people with sickle cell disease die before they turn
