Our goal for Watch Dogs was to create not only a popular video game but also to establish a new IP and a franchise that would spawn sequels for years to come. However, only one out of every 20 new IP launches succeeds in today’s video game industry.

To be a success, a new IP must be in the top 10 video games for the year. In North America, this means selling at least 3 million units – no small feat as prior to May 2014, the last new IP launch that had succeeded in breaking the 3 million unit mark was in 2007. In order for us to reach our blockbuster sales goals, we needed to galvanize the mainstream, not just the hard core gamer.

Adding to this challenge, the game’s primary differentiator was hacking. But hacking was a problem. Early focus group research indicated that the majority of gamers did not consider hacking to be cool or aspirational. Hacking was seen as something done by geeks behind a computer screen in a basement, not something that could happen on the street or in the midst of an action-oriented entertainment experience.

We needed to change perceptions of what hacking is—and could be. Hacking had to become something that could be embraced by the mainstream as the unique superpower of a modern day hero. We needed to make hacking look as visually exciting and as memorable as shooting, driving and hand to hand combat – all experiences you expect from blockbuster video games.
