Project Main Details
More than 150 young ICT specialists took part in the AgriHack Talent Caribbean contest run by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and partners. The regional championship sought to develop innovative ICT applications that address key Caribbean agricultural challenges and drive agri-enterprise among young people. The eight regional finalists, drawn from the results of national contests in six Caribbean countries – Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago – spent the first four days of the 13th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) fine-tuning their applications before the winners were announced on Thursday October 9. The CWA has been held this week in Paramaribo, Suriname and ends today (October 10).
All the finalists were given the opportunity to pitch their products to participants attending the CWA, before the regional winners were selected by an international jury. The contest was based on the idea of a hackathon – a gathering that brings together computer programmers for a short period of time to develop an ICT application or platform that offers solutions for a specific challenge.
The ICT applications created by the first three prize-winners will now be developed and incubated, to promote their successful rollout in the region.

Bringing change to agriculture, and at the same time giving young ICT developers an alternative career opening and capacity building on ICT for Agriculture. That is what Agrihack Talent Caribbean is all about.
00:46 – 01:04
Initiated by the CTA and supported by institutions like CARDI, IICA and by ICT innovation institutions in the Caribbean such as Connectimass and Telesur, this groundbreaking program centres on a unique software development competition or Hackathon, and ambitions to strengthen youth engagement in agriculture and boost the image of the farming sector.
03:26 – 03:37
The finals of the AgriHack Talent Caribbean was organised by the CARICOM at the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) in Suriname in October 2014. The participants were given the opportunity to network with CWA participants and to also to present their prototypes.
05:43 – 05:58
With the finals in full swing, the competitors are working long hours to get their devices and applications picture perfect. Winning a prize in this contest will take talent, but also perseverance and nerves of iron.
CTA will be offering the top 3 teams intensive coaching and incubation for six to months, with just one goal in mind: to get their innovations fine-tuned and to favour their actual adoption or launch on the market, in order to help the rural agriculture reach the next level.
The colorful cocktail organised in the presence of key officials including the Directors of IICA, CARDI, CAFAN and the Minister in charge of Agriculture of Guyana ended these regional finals and open great expectations for winners and for agriculture in the Caribbean.
