Settlers' Stories Elisha Mardin 
As part of the *****************************we are producing an oral-history exhibit called Settlers' Stories, in which visitors can hear the stories of settlers taken from primary-source documents, letters they wrote, diary entries, etc., from a range of time between the 1850s to the 1930s.

Elisha Mardin began ranching on the Cottonwood River in Chase County in 1859. He married Elizabeth Frank, whom he called Bettie, in 1862. He was 30 years old at the time this diary was written. The attached image is for reference.

Script Details

***Please submit sample for auditions. 
Tuesday, April 14, 1863 It cleared off pleasant. The wind from the North changed to West. We burned some in the pasture.

Wednesday 15 Very pleasant this morning. The sun shines out fine. We burned the hill over, had good luck. Bettie went up to see a sick child. I was at home all day.

Thursday, April 16, 1863 We burned off the prairie in the bend in the afternoon, bought six steers off Shafer then came to town. I stayed all night at Watsons.

Wednesday April 22 I went down to Shelenbargers and got his steers and two of the Allen steers. In the afternoon I helped herd at night. We burned some of the prairie on the bottom.

Thursday 23 I herded in the forenoon. In the afternoon we burnt off the weeds wind in south east. It rained at night, a fine shower.

Sunday 26 I stayed at home all day … I traded with an Indian for a poney.
