Project Main Details

Sergei Titov

"Lunatics" will be an animated science fiction series about the first settlers on the Moon. Our tagline is "Someone has to be crazy enough to go first!"

It's largely driven by character humor (and drama) as well as the hard-SF near-future (2040) setting -- both of which are informed by our many years' experience with space development advocates and professionals.

The pilot episode is titled "No Children in Space" and tells the story of how the youngest of the colonists, Georgiana Lerner, gets to the Moon (prior to which, there were "no children in space"), establishing many of the basic themes of the series along the way, as well as handling some important technical expositionm, setting, and characterization.

This call is for the part of MAJ. SERGEI TITOV, the cosmonaut pilot who flies the Soyuz launch vehicle in the pilot, as well as the Moon Shuttle.

He is also a friend of the Lerner family, being the elder brother of one of the other colonists, and having trained with them prior to the flight.

Although Sergei is essentially a "supporting" character, he has such a large part in the pilot that we've decided to treat him as a PRINCIPAL for this episode. There is a possibility of future guest appearances if the series is funded, but it's not a requirement. As such, this goes well beyond a simple voice-over, and you'll need to contact us directly ("auditions at anansispaceworks dot com") for further details about the part and to organize the recording details.

Sergei is Russian, of course, and he must speak both Russian and English in the pilot episode. It's okay for him to have a pretty thick Russian accent in English.

We're looking for a fairly deep, jovial voice for Sergei. He's a good-natured athletic guy.

Final submissions will be in FLAC or WAV format. Performances will require online participation in a "table read" for each script. We plan to schedule these on Saturdays, but there is some flexibility about scheduling (it will have to be arranged with the other actors).

I've quoted just a couple of lines from the script here in English. The Russian lines are not yet translated, so I've included a little poem in Russian as well.

The actual Russian lines will mostly be technical, but there may be some dialog with Tim Farmer (Sergei's nephew), if we are lucky enough as to have a bilingual actor for Tim as well.

This is a very low budget "free culture" production, which is not exactly the same as saying it is "non-profit", but there are similarities. The work will be released online under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. There is no meaningful concept of "piracy" for this type of release, since all copying is legitimate, so long as attribution is kept and all copies are released under the same terms.

For money, we rely on fan-funding through crowd-funding before release (Kickstarter) and 'creator endorsed' sales after release (i.e. sales with trademarked "proceeds support the artists" labeling).

If we get more funding in, then it will be more like a commercial project and it will probably continue for some time. We intend to nurse this project through the first "block" of episodes (5 in all) on minimal crowd-funding support if necessary in order to kickstart the series, but our goal is to get at least to our "basic funding" level for the pilot and, if possible, raise funds to cover the next few episodes as well.

Simplified version:

* $200 equipment allowance is payable after Kickstarter and before recording. This is guaranteed, even in our "worst-case successful Kickstart"

* Contingent on funding, $800/day will be paid to principals on completion of the recording sessions. This is paid for in the "typical-case successful Kickstart"

* Percentages on 'creator endorsed' sales will probably be paid annually and will obviously depend on sales (if sales are high enough, we'll switch to quarterly). There will be funds going into this from the Kickstarter in a "best-case Kickster" where we make over 250% of our goal. Alternatively, it will be paid from post-release creator-endorsed sales of the videos.

* The percentage on CE-profits for a principal voice actor is going to depend on the breakdown for other artists on the whole production, but it's safe to expect 1%.

Our goal is to get the pilot produced for as little as possible, because that increases the chance we'll actually get the Kickstart money to do it and thus get the series off the ground. If we get that far and get fans, we'll have a chance to sell them on funding the rest of the series.
