Project Main Details

Seeking talent for museum project
Documentary company seeks voice talent for a museum project that includes a significant amount of first person testimony from the Civil War era (gleaned from letters, diaries, news articles, etc.).

If you’ve watched or heard Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary, with its many first-person excerpts read aloud, you have a sense of the style of delivery: honest, conversational, not overly dramatic or showy but warm and full of emotion, paying attention to the language and where emphasis should fall in each sentence, letting the words breath, and making it sound as if the person speaking is across the room or even inside one’s head. Our uppermost goal is to make these voices from the past sound like real people talking to us today.

Because we have over 75 characters to cast for the museum media we are producing, we are bundling similar characters. This role comprises three characters, all from South Carolina, who fought in the Civil War.

You must be able to record and deliver professional quality reads. A sample excerpt to record is below. The excerpts are short (most are in the range of 150-300 words), and depending on the number of lines, we are offering $75-150 per role.

If interested, please submit a sample by Wednesday Sept. 26.

Script Details

*** Please submit custom audition.
These three excerpts represent the entirety of the script for this role:

Unidentified Confederate Officer: Give them the bayonet; if they run, then see if they can outrun the bullet.

BF Brown (Confederate soldier): So well did we go in that…we actually entered the Theological Seminary, and P.H. Reilly… captured some ten or more of the panic-stricken enemy who had sought shelter in one of the rooms in the Seminary building.

Abner Perrin (36-year-old Confederate General from SC): I now directed the First Regiment to avoid a breastwork of rails behind, where I discovered the enemy was posted…and attack in his flank…the enemy were here completely routed…much of their artillery would have been captured, but the first and fourteenth in their pursuit again met a force of the enemy’s infantry, strongly posted behind a stone wall, near and to the left of the college.
Please note that you should only use the script or your recording of it for auditioning purposes. The script is property, unless otherwise specified, of the voice seeker and it is protected by international copyright laws.
