Sylvia: Wow, some announcement, huh?
Jan: I know. It’s great to see and hear all the things our organization does to support people in need.
Sylvia: Yeah, true. But ... well, there’s still some stuff that I just don’t understand.
Jan: Oh really? Like what?
Sylvia: Well, that bit about reaching out to the American Indian population in our communities. I just don’t understand why THEY require such special attention this way?
Jan: Sylvia, don’t you recall what happened last year during the wildfires that spread uncontrollably? Much of the damaged areas were in American Indian communities.
Sylvia: Yes, I recall that. Quite sad, really.
Jan: Well that was just the beginning. Did you know that in all of the local shelters that we stood up, less than 1% of those who actually came through our doors were American Indian?
Sylvia: No, I didn’t know that.
Jan: Yes, most of them expressed cultural reasons for not utilizing the shelters. Being a sovereign nation, many looked WITHIN their tribe for support.
Sylvia: Wow, I see your point.
Jan: So with that, my guess is, the new plan to really reach those communities is an effort to understand the American Indian culture a bit better, and to also provide resources which enable them to continue to operate independently in times of emergency and disaster.
Sylvia: Yeah, I guess you’re right. Wow, thanks for that perspective, Jan. I never would have thought of it that way.
