Script Details

Dramatic read needed, in the style of VO talent, Liev Schreiver.
At the stroke of 12 noon on December 9th, 1969, a coin toss was held in the offices
of the New York Horse Racing Association.

The result would determine the ownership of a -- as yet unborn – Chestnut-colored
thoroughbred colt that would go on to become one of the undisputed racing cham
pions of all time.

TEXT: Secretariat.

Sired by the legendary-front running speed horse, Bold Ruler, there was little doubt
that Secretariat would be fast at short distances. But even after winning Horse of
the Year in 1972, Secretariat remained unproven at distances beyond a mile – a fact
made painfully clear when he suffered a surprising and humiliating loss at the 1973
Wood Memorial – just two weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby, the first jewel of
Horse Racing’s Triple Crown.

At a mile and quarter in distance, the race known as “The Run for the Roses” was
even longer than the Wood Memorial, so as dawn broke over the storied grounds
and stadiums of Churchill Downs on race day, observers and pundits nationwide
raised doubts about Secretariat’s potential to maintain his well-known speed over a
longer distance race.

Did he have the stamina to go the distance?

Did he have the heart of a true champion?

It would take less than two minutes to find out.
