I wasn’t born into a rich, powerful family. In fact, it often seemed like my family situation closed as many doors as it opened. And that’s one of the reasons I get so excited when I start teaching people how to use real estate to create freedom. If I can overcome all of the challenges I faced and build positive cash flow, I know anyone else can, too.
There was nothing remarkable about the day I was born in Dover, New Jersey. I was the second son in what seemed an average family. My father was a plumber, and my mom worked a lot of odd jobs, such as being a server in a restaurant and the person who put up displays for greeting card companies. We never had a lot of money, and we weren’t getting calls to discuss high-level business deals at the country club.
When I was two, my father left my mother, my brother (who is six years older than I am), and me. I don’t know what the reason was or who was to blame, but I don’t remember him living with us. I do remember my mother working whatever odd jobs she could find to keep food on the table with no support from anyone else. Some of the jobs she took meant she had to travel or work on weekends, and I didn’t get to see her as much as I would have liked. But that is the life of a single mother. She even tried real estate at one time but never took it to a high level.
Life was tough for us after my father left. We couldn’t afford nice places to live. One of our apartments was a cockroach infested rat trap in a bad part of town. We had to move after one of the tenants shot a gun. About a week before that, someone had stolen the battery out of our car. It’s a good thing I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth, because it probably would have been snatched from me and pawned.
