Project Main Details

Saudi Aramco World magazine podcasts
Saudi Aramco World, the award-winning bimonthly magazine and Web site ************************** dedicated to cross-cultural education in English about the arts, geography and history of the Middle East and Islamic world, is developing a podcast series. The initial phase will offer audio narrations of selected, previously published articles. Tones that work for us would also work for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, NPR and BBC documentaries & reportage. VOs will be selected for particular articles based on ability to fluently handle non-English words—most often Arabic (usually Saudi Arabic; but at times others, from Morocco to Syria). The best voices will feel “cosmopolitan,” “multicultural,” “fusion,” i.e., based in any of US, UK or Canadian English, with light accents or inflections toward regions or languages covered in the article. Mostly we need CLEAR, ATTRACTIVE, INTERESTING for a well-educated global audience with concentrations in Middle East, USA and Europe. Lengths of articles are 1000 to 4000 words; most include quoted material. Finally, a comment about music, backgrounds and production: We are not sure how complicated it is to add music and other background audio, and we have access to an in-house studio that can polish our productions here at our offices.

The story of Aramco World—predecessor of Saudi Aramco World—begins in November 1949 in New York, at Aramco’s headquarters, then at 505 Park Avenue. The company was 16 years old; World War II had been over for four years. In Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, oil production was soaring to 40 times above its wartime levels. To the Americans, “it was as if a new frontier were opening: Seemingly unlimited resources were being discovered in an unknown land,” wrote former Aramco World assistant editor Bill Tracy. “Following so closely the horror of two World Wars, the boom was exhilarating, easily understood as a sign of a brighter future.”
###END 1###

Mehmet Ergen should be tickled pink. The bushy-haired, 43-year-old director has a hit in a brand-new theater. In less than a month before the opening, his cast and crew transformed a garage in a run-down neighborhood into one of the most lively experi-mental stages in Istanbul. The play, “Boy Gets Girl” by American playwright Rebecca Gilman, became one of the hottest tickets in the 2008 Istanbul Theater Festival. Ergen, who splits his time between Istanbul and London, where he is founder and artistic di-rector of Arcola Theatre, is brimming with optimism when I meet him at the trendy House Café on equally trendy Taksim Square. But there’s a wrinkle in his bed of roses.
For the festival, he says he would have preferred staging a work by a Turkish play-wright. He submitted one—”Silver Birch House” by Leyla Nazlý, which he had directed in London—but the organizers rejected it for reasons he suspects have to do with the play’s exploration of Turkey’s political upheavals in the 1970’s.
“Part of our problem,” reckons Ergen, is that “sometimes, it seems we just don’t want to know about ourselves.”
In the Turkish and foreign plays he has planned for his new theater, named Talim-hane, and in his workshops, Ergun aims to hold mirrors to society. “I’m encouraging my students to write realistically about things we talk about every day—about EU membership, about veiled women, about conflicts within schools and universities,” he says.
