I am a Soybean Farmer.
I’m proud to help feed the world, and I take that responsibility seriously.
I’m proud of my country, and the community where my family lives. I try to make a positive impact – I help coach my kids’ teams, I’m part of organizations that try to make a difference in people’s lives. This is my home. My parents live here, and so did their parents, and I hope my kids will be proud to be here, too.
“Farmer” seems like a simple word, but these days, that means a lot of things. I have to be a marketer, a customer, a lobbyist and an activist. I’m both a landlord and a tenant, and I have to be aware of opportunities to buy or sell farmland, depending on the market.
There are a lot of things I value. Hard work, good service. Fair treatment. Loyalty, and Local support. Trust is important. Things today are pretty complicated; I need to know that I can rely on the people I do business with, the information they give me and the inputs that I use to improve my yields and maximize the return I get on my investment.
Most recently, I haven’t seen a great increase in the average soybean yields per acre over the past several years. The National Average for Soybean yields have been consistently around 43/bu.. Today, I pay more for seed input costs per acre for “technology in the bag” but where’s the increase in the combine?
Recently, Trait Technology has been a big innovation for us but prior to that, it had been a while since the last big step.
So why am I paying more for seed and not seeing a big increase in yield?
We are also seeing resistant weeds in my area. I need tools to help me improve my weed control. I have used Glyphosate for years, but the current resistance concerns make me nervous. How will they impact me in my future weed control programs?, I am also seeing fungicides used on Soybeans with great results, so that’s a real positive.
Growers are getting information from so many different sources these days. Universities, online, retailers, consultants, neighbors, manufacturers, seed salesmen, blogs, facebook – I do my best, but it gets pretty confusing!
You know, I do my best, but I ‘m not necessarily maximizing the total potential of all the Soybean acres that I have in my operation. I know my yield potential is much higher than I have been getting on my land.
I know I need to constantly evaluate my seed selection, fertility levels, seed treatment uses, weed control and fungicides on my crops.
My job is going to get any simpler. So I’ll continue to look to my “Trusted Advisors” to help me get the most out of every acre on my operation. I want the most “potential from my pod” if you know what I mean!
I have a huge responsibility to feed the world. I feel that responsibility, but you know what? I really cherish the opportunity! At the end of the day, I know what I do makes a real difference..
I am a Soybean Farmer!
