VO (PRIOR TO FIRST CLIP)
Ever since she was a little girl singing in her living room, Katie Klaus knew she was destined for something special.
I always loved signing, but the Little Mermaid actually was, was like the first time I remember kind of becoming obsessed about learning the music and being able to sing it. That was probably the first time that I was like “Oh this is something that I really like and this is something that I love.”
With a voice, a message and a dream, Katie headed for the big time itself … Broadway. New York greeted her with opportunity and success came early.
In New York you go to like, grungy studios and you audtion and you sing and so O auditioned at the studio and after that they said we want you to come down to the theater that the show was actually being held at. So it was really, really special that I could actually be at the theater and and and be able to sing on the stage. So when I walked in the door you know I, bare stage, and I take a minute, the piano starts, and I just let it out, I just nailed it, I just sold that song, you know, I was like giving everything that I humanly possibly had.
Cast in Broadway musicals like “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” “Inherit the Wind” and “A Catered Affair” Katie was living her dream.
So I was over by the piano and working on things and they said thank you very much, that’s all we need, you know, we’ll call you and uh and I I I grabbed my bag and I grabbed my shoes and my music and just ran out the door. I flung the door open and and I ran to the side of the building, you know, so no one saw me and I pulled out my phone and I called my dad and my mom and I was just like “I think, I think I got it,” you know, “I think I got this job, I really think I made it you guys” you know. I start crying and they started to crying and were, um, literally standing in the streets of New York sobbing into my phone with my dance bag, you know, but, uh, it was a special moment.
As quickly as her dream rose, Katie would see it fall as she began to feel the effects of debilitating auto-immune disorder.
In one minute it was gone. I was late for my cue one night so I ran down the stairs and by the time I got there I was out of breath. I literally could not breathe, you know, and the door opens and I’m standing there just like ‘huuuuuhhhh’, you know, I mean literally gasping for breath and everybody is just looking at me. I knew my job was threatened and I wasn’t going to be able to perform the night we closed. Um we had this big closing number where everybody comes on stage and sings and I remember I went out on stage and I couldn’t sing anything, you know, and I was mouthing with everybody else and I looked around and and everybody was, everybody was present, you know, everybody was there and able to sing out and, and say their lines and I wasn’t, you know, it was something so small and so simple and I couldn’t even do it.
Her life’s ambition unraveling and her body failing, Katie was filled with questions.
If I can’t give myself to the world, why do I wake up every day? I’m in the prime of my life, you know, I, I worked hard and I graduated college and I did everything right, I did everything I was supposed to do to get to my dream, you know, and I got it, and, and now now I’m not going to be able to live it out, you know, I’m going to be able to see what it’s like and then I have to retreat, you know, what am I going to do?
For Katie, getting better wasn’t the only goal; she needed a solution that would allow her to take to the stage again without fear. A solution that would once again put her dream within reach.
When they told me they were getting rid of the permacath, I shot through the roof, I was so excited. I mean I thought that was something I was going to get stuck with the rest of my life. Not only could I not be seen with them, I couldn’t let people know I was sick. This is something that I’m going to have to be very strategic about not letting people know that, I have a disease, you know, you look at someone that is sick and you automatically are going to write them off, like they’re not strong enough, so when they told me they were going to place these ports, I mean, I was ecstatic, you know? I literally jumped threw a party and I was excited, you know, and – it’s a life changer.
Thanks to enterprising interventional radiologists, Katie had ports implanted … seemingly simple medical devices that gave Katie’s life back to her. The lights once again shined down as she found herself back in the Big Apple … back on Broadway.
It seemed like such a minor switch for my doctors, and you know, the hospitals, but for me it was like, it was literally the difference between living your life and not. A month later I was at the beach with my family and I was able to swim in the water with them, and um, shortly after that I was able to get my voice back and shortly after that I was able to move back to the city. I was a person again. I was no longer a sick person, I was a person and it, uh, I mean it changed my life, you know. I can, I can get my dream back and I can, I can live the dream and I am, you know, I’m living the dream.
