were asked what they felt was the largest barrier to student success,
they came to a startling conclusion…
Chronic environmental stress.
Few people realize that two out of three kids – nearly 46 million each year – are exposed to violence, sexual abuse or trauma at home or in their neighborhoods. And it’s taking a toll on today’s youth.
Here’s what’s happening: When the human brain experiences fear, it floods the body with stress hormones that prepare us for danger. But when a child’s brain is exposed to repeated violence or trauma those hormones become toxic – literally changing how their brain functions.
The result is damage to their memory cells, motor skills and their immune system. In fact, prolonged exposure to stress can lead to anxiety, depression and even PTSD. These kids are less likely to do well in school and can have difficulty learning, socializing and are more likely to get into trouble.
But while teachers call it the elephant in the classroom, we call it beatable.
Research shows that the effects of environmental stress can be reversed – and that children’s brains can return to normal function. All it takes…is a safe and supportive relationship with a caring adult – like a family member, a neighbor, teacher or coach – to turn a child around. Someone who will stand up for them. Someone who will listen. Someone who makes them feel like they matter. Maybe someone like you.
