We have seen God move through men to change hearts, nations and cultures through the ages. Revivals are not a new concept. They have been defining moments in culture, they usually begin with one man but the fire of Revival quickly spreads.
John Wesley. He describes his decision to follow Christ after years of growing up in the church by saying, "I felt my heart strangely warmed." In the following year, he discovered his passion for preaching. He would take any opportunity to preach whenever an assembly could be brought together, whether in a church, a field, a cottage or chapel. Wesley heard from God, acted on what he heard and sparked a renewed passion for teaching the living word of God. His teachings would be the basis for the Methodist Church, which has grown to 12 million members worldwide.
Jonathan Edwards. The son of a minister, he did not decide to whole-heartedly devote himself to Christ until his final year of college. He became determined to preach the message of God's grace to anyone seeking truth. Word spread of audacious preaching. Revival spread through his town. His community was transformed. The message was contagious and quickly spread all throughout New England and the rest of the American colonies. The revival was known as "The Great Awakening", commonly believed to be the greatest spiritual awakening in the history of our nation. God's word was changing lives and changing a nation as eyes were opened to the message of grace for every person.
Revivals are not only a thing of the past. God continues to move through people who believe that God is capable of anything. People who believe God. People who experience God.
Billy Graham. He's preached to more people than any other individual in history. In 1949, Dr. Graham set up tents in a parking lot in Los Angeles for a series of revival meetings. What began as a 3-week revival continued for 8 weeks. 65 sermons later the revival came to a close and 16,000 people had heard the word of God. Following the Los Angeles crusade opportunities to reach more people through radio and TV became available, and a great move of God was in full force. To this day, Dr. Graham has spoken to more than 2.2 billion people worldwide, and, literally, millions have made decisions to follow Christ.
God has moved mightily through the ages and continues to do so today. We have seen God inspire men, change millions of lives and shape culture. Revivals are not a thing of the past. Revivals exist when people believe that God is capable of much more than we could ever accomplish with our own strength. Revivals exist whenever people experience the wonders of what God is capable of and allow it to fuel their passion to reach the world with the Gospel.
