Carved by ice, tempered by fire, and nurtured by climate, eighty percent of Iowas landscape was once carpeted with tallgrass prairie.
On this prairie, showy flowers of forbs and shrubs intermingled with the sedges and grasses to create a patchwork quilt of color that changed through the seasons from the first green-up in spring to the fading russets and gold of autumn.
Today, the once vast mid-continent prairie is greatly diminished with less than two percent of the original tallgrass remaining. In Iowa, the twenty- eight million acre prairie landscape has been reduced to widely scattered remnants totaling less than twenty-eight thousand acres. Less than one tenth of one percent of the original prairie remains in Iowa.
Not only is the tallgrass prairie a part of our cultural and biological heritage, but as a functioning ecosystem it provides invaluable ecological services.
The prairie performs vital roles in building and stabilizing soil, increasing water absorption and infiltration to improve water quality and reduce flooding, producing fuel for bioenergy, sequestering carbon, furnishing forage for herbivores, and providing wildlife habitat.
It is essential that we return prairie to the landscape by resorting degraded remnants and reconstructing new patches. The Tallgrass Prairie Center restores native vegetation for the benefit of society and environment through research, education, and technology. We are restoring a national treasure.
The programs of the ************************ at the University of Northern Iowa are making a positive impact throughout Iowa and the upper Midwest.
Protecting the tallgrass prairie of Iowa and beyond--and educating citizens-- is vital to our future environment. Help us grow something special and continue the work of the *************************
