The world’s youth population is larger now than any time in history. In Zambia, approximately 74% of the population is below age 30.

Although contraceptives are widely available at little or no cost, teenage pregnancy rates are high and use of birth control methods is relatively low in this age group.

Avoiding unplanned pregnancy at this age allows a girl to protect her health and independence, and complete her education. It’s one of the best choices she can make for her own future.

The Diva Centre is a teen-focused reproductive health service for urban Zambia. It was designed for young women, in collaboration with teens and their communities in Lusaka. Here, girls find a safe and relaxed space to hang out, learn more from their peers, ask honest questions about sex and contraception, and receive reproductive health services.

The guided journey begins with Teen Connectors who hit the streets, organize teen-only events, visit schools with our community partners and talk to other girls about birth control methods, while dispelling common myths about contraception.

This girl-to-girl outreach helps girls develop the confidence to enter a clinic, access services and ask the questions they need to ask.

Interested girls then visit the Diva Centre: a safe, teen-only space that speaks to girls in their own language.

The nurse walks through different contraceptive methods using the Divas: five inspirational characters that embody the benefits and lifestyle choices of each type of birth control.

The Diva Centre opened its doors in 2014. In the first 3 months, the Centre received 800 girls, 88% of which accessed services. Half of those girls had never used contraception before.

This is more than an avenue for girls to access birth control. It’s also a place where they can connect with peers, think about their future and consider how contraceptives fit into that vision.

We believe that to access teens, a new approach to reproductive health is necessary. Join us in building this future.
