InnerCity Mission Relief Report

Onitsha, home to the biggest open market in Africa is located in Anambra state, South Eastern Nigeria with a population of about five hundred thousand people. Onitsha lies at a major east-west crossing point of the Niger River with the Niger Bridge connecting South Eastern with Western Nigeria.

The heavy rain in the last couple of weeks has led to the overflow of water reservoirs, forced release of dam waters, and breaching of river boundaries and banks resulting to unprecedented flood disaster in this south eastern part of Niger.

Play with clips of the devastation

The flood has led to the damage of roads, houses, bridges , loss of life, displacement of people. This development has worsened the existing poverty in the communities.

Children have been displaced and rendered homeless; they have stopped attending schools as their institution of learning which were not left out in the flooding have become swimming pools. They now have to do menial jobs in a bid to feed not just themselves but also their families.

Track-ups [the boy’s interview, marine waterside]

Several hundreds of children and their families have managed to flee for safety with nothing, in what has turned out to be Nigeria’s worst natural disaster in history. They paddle in improvised canoes to the nearest communities for refuge.
