To begin, make sure you have the necessary parts and tools. You should have a wheel assembly (pause), 10 lug nuts (pause), oil (pause), a shorty one inch impact (pause), a 475 foot pound yellow torque stick, and a 33 millimeter impact socket.
Before placing the wheel on the hub, inspect the wheel assembly for dents, cracks and condition. Inspect the studs for aluminum pieces, paint, rust or any foreign material. If found, wipe the threads with a rag or clean them with a wire brush. If the stud has stretched to an hourglass shape, you must replace the stud along with the studs on both sides of the stretched stud.
Once you have inspected the wheel the studs, place the wheel on the hub. At this point, check the studs again and wipe off any metal shavings that have been deposited on the studs from installing the wheel.
Now it’s time to inspect the lug nuts. Check the thread condition of each lug nut and turn it on its washer to make sure that it spins freely. If the threads are suspect or the nut does not spin freely on the washer, replace the lug nut. When you are satisfied with the condition of the studs and lug nuts, use S-A-E Thirty oil to lubricate them.
On every lug nut, add two drops of oil between the nut and the washer. Add another two drops of oil to the first three threads of each stud. Thread the lug nuts on to the studs for two to three turns. Repeat this process for the remaining nine nuts and studs.
Before tightening the lug nuts, be advised that the torque specification for a wheel lug nut is 450 to 500 foot pounds.
Place the yellow torque stick with socket on the impact and lightly seat the lug nuts using this sequence. After the lug nuts are seated, use the same sequence to fully tighten the lug nuts.
To tell when the lug nuts are tightened to 475 pounds, watch the torque stick while tightening the lug nut. The torque stick will rotate the lug nut until 475 foot pounds is reached and then it will stop turning the lug nut. When you are finished, remove the jack stand and lower and remove the jack.
Now it’s time to check the accuracy of your torque stick, which should be done every month. Follow these instructions to verify the 475 foot pound torque stick is within specification. Properly install a wheel assembly to a steering axle position using the yellow 475 foot pound torque stick. Remove the jack stand and lower the jack so the tire is on the ground.
Using a 600 foot pound calibrated torque wrench, set it to 465 foot pounds. Check the torque on all 10 lug nuts. At 465 foot pounds, the torque wrench must click without turning the lug nuts. If there is any lug nut movement, the torque stick must be cut in half and discarded.
Now, set the torque wrench to 475 foot pounds and check all 10 lug nuts again. If there was lug nut movement previously, torque the lug nuts to 475 foot pounds.
If there was NO lug nut movement previously, check all 10 lug nuts with the torque wrench set at 475 foot pounds. There should be no or very minor movement of the lug nuts before the torque wrench clicks at 475 foot pounds. The torque stick is good to continue using. Once complete, reset the torque wrench to its lowest setting.
Proper lug nut torqueing is essential because over-torqueing can cause a number of problems, including stretched or broken studs. It can also damage both the wheel components, hubs, and the lug nuts.
