This module describes the benefits of marrying career coaching to academic advising. Advisors can help students understand how their major or career choice translates to employment.
The primary objective is to stress the importance of the student/advisor relationship. Many times, especially with first generation students, the advisor plays a critical, supportive role in the student’s academic career. First Year Seminar classes are critical; they provide a welcoming learning environment. At Amarillo College we are working toward having the First Year Seminar (FYS), which encourages student engagement, in core curriculum.
Career Coaching combined with academic advising does help the student see themselves in a broader perspective. It also shows the level of support that advisors have for their students. The following two are excellent models.
For first-generation students, we see advisors as translators in this new and confusing land of higher education.
O’Banion is highly regarded and the holistic manner of career coaching/advising does help the student realize their goals.
Students sometimes do not have the words to express what their goals are, the advisor can facilitate the realization of their goals. The advisor can also recommend resources within the institution that will help the student achieve those goals. For example: at Amarillo College we have an award-winning Math Outreach Center. It helps many students overcome their fear of math and successfully complete math courses.
