Establishing the true value of a private fleet can be very challenging. More often than not, there are a number of factors that may not be considered.
As a private fleet operator, it is critical to your company’s success to understand the true value of your company. At the end of the day, it is about whether your private fleet helps you manage your time, money and risk.
There are many factors that make assessing the true value of a private fleet difficult. Fleet costs are hard to identify and analyze. Costs are often scattered across multiple corporate budgets, and only after you uncover all costs can you begin to understand them.
If any of these factors sound like challenges you have faced within your fleet, it may be time for a new direction. Understanding and managing the principles of Total Cost of Ownership (or TCO) is a competitive weapon in gaining an edge over the competition.

A good TCO model assesses and plans for Network Design, Strategic Sourcing and Equipment Life Cycle Management, Risk/Regulatory/Safety and Fleet Rationalization.
Being successful in one category does not garner success in the overall model. Realizing an effective TCO model comes only after efficiently operating and examining each of these factors.

Important contributors provide insight into each of these factors. Having visibility is essential in establishing all costs. There may be costs out there you aren’t even considering, such as maintenance and repair, administration and overhead, including insurance for cargo and associates, technology and residual value. Additionally, there are operation and acquisition costs and life cycle and annual fleet mile costs. The list goes on and on.
Recognizing all costs within your organization is crucial to achieve the ultimate goal in business: to successfully buy, operate/service and sell more efficiently. You can do this by establishing what your total cost of ownership is. Efficient fleet management strategies address transportation assets and specifications, sourcing optimization, maintenance and repair operations and administration policies.

“Emotional Impact”-Presence of the individual’s workflow, humanizing the problem
This challenge to address all these issues can cause a company to lose focus of their true costs vs. value. Working through the complicated sequences and identifying all elements and pain points that can affect your overall TCO is no easy task. It includes collecting and validating data, rationalizing the fleet and specifications, revisiting/revising sourcing decisions, optimizing finance and administration and possibly developing a new fleet model. It may be time to engage an outside partner who can help you strengthen your fleet and help your company gain a competitive advantage.
